    <title>Discovery of the mandible of a young child in a Gravettian level of Gargas cave (Hautes-Pyrenees, France)</title>

      <p class="resume">New archaeological research has been carried out in the lower gallery of Gargas cave (Hautes-Pyrénées) since 2004. The main results concern the Gravettian occupations of this gallery and update data from former excavations directed by Cartailhac and Breuil (1911-1913), in particular, data relating to the functional, spatial and chronological characteristics of site use by the authors of the rock art. During the 2011 excavations, a young child’s mandible was discovered in the upper part of the Gravettian level of Room I, where two thirds of the painted hands are located. The aim of this paper is to present this discovery with a preliminary description of the mandible and its stratigraphic location. The interest of these human remains is evaluated in regard to the context of recent discoveries in Cussac and Vilhonneur and updated data for southwestern Europe.     <title>Middle Solutrean engraved bone artefacts from Rochefort Cave (Saint-Pierre-sur-Erve, Mayenne, France)</title>

      <p class="resume">Within the Solutrean portable corpus gathered from Rochefort cave, a series of twenty-five items was isolated. It is mainly made up of herbivore ribs but also of fragments of long bones and ivory that are showing different types of incisions. Their lay out does not indicate simple grooves related to butchering activities. Remarkable items such as an entire brown bear rib or a fragment of mammoth tusk are part of this series of incised pieces. These symbolic engraved decorations are known for the Solutrean period but the imprecise chronostratigraphic contexts of most of the older collections make them unreliable items of reference. As the search for comparisons has not really been fruitful, the Rochefort cave corpus singles out by the quantity and quality of the objects that have been inventoried.</p>]]></description>

    <title>From the Adour valley to the Gelise valley (western part of the Gers department): an important occurrence of siliceous raw material of Senonian origin.</title>

      <p class="resume">This study refers the western part of the “Gers department” which covers the Adour valley, its tributaries (Izaute, Midour and Douze) and the Gélise valley. A geological study was carried out from 2010 to 2012. It allowed us to collect 290 alluvial siliceous pebbles from the Plio-Pleistocene sediments. At the same time, 132 flint artefacts from prehistoric sources in the Gers (Upper Palaeolithic) were collected. Petrographic, sedimentological and palaeontological studies were carried out. They allowed us to distinguish 19 lithological types:<br />- 1 related to the Cenozoic formation;<br />- 2 associated with Flysch deposits from the Pyrenean orogenic belt;<br />- 10 attributed to the Senonian age (from the Coniacian to the Campanian);<br />- 6 imputed to the Upper Maastrichtian with <em>Lepidorbitoides.<br /></em>Then these types were brought together into six groups that show their stratigraphic positions and their palaeogeographic environments at different time periods.<br />- 0.2 % of the alluvial pebbles were related to t...</p>]]></description>

    <title>The Sorcerer’s cave in Saint-Cirq-du-Bugue (Dordogne, France): new readings. Report of the 2010 and 2011 campaigns</title>

      <p class="resume">Two main reasons have led us to start again the study of the Sorcerer’s cave in Saint-Cirq-du-Bugue (Dordogne): first of all the real progress existing in recent years in the means available for the study of prehistoric parietal art, which had not been applied to the site; and secondly the discovery of vandalism on some of the art, which needed to be assessed precisely. The new campaign of tracings, as well as the attention given to understanding the making of the engravings in connection with the underground relief shapes allowed a better apprehension of the artists’ environment at the time of the making of the works of art, together with a more precise idea of the gestures and techniques used.     <title>Biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental implications of the Middle Palaeolithic and Chatelperronian occupations of La Tour Fondue site in Chauriat (Puy-de-Dôme, France)</title>

      <h1 class="texte">1 - Introduction</h1>
      <p class="texte">La Tour Fondue rock shelter is situated in the Grande Limagne area of the Auvergne, about 15 km from Clermont-Ferrand and next to the village of Chauriat, at an altitude of 465 m (fig. 1). The site is located at the foot of a small limestone massif made of Oligocene sedimentary rocks (dolomitic and silicified limestone) on the Southwest side of the Puy de Pileyre. The discovery of the site was made by Mr Hervouët, owner of the land, who unearthed bones and lithic objects during the construction of his garage in 1988 (fig. 2). He immediately informed the “Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles” of  his finds. Through the intervention of J.-P. Daugas, then curator at Antiquities Management, several persons were sent to the site. The inventory of the bone pieces, established by J.-L. Guadelli, notably includes two fragments of human crania that we were not able to find again. No inventory of the lithic material was done from this first visit.</p>

    <title>Magdalenian dog remains from Le Morin rock-shelter (Gironde, France). Socio-economic implications of a zootechnical innovation</title>

      <p class="resume">We present in this paper new remains and direct radiocarbon dates of small canids from Le Morin rock shelter (Gironde, France) which constitute a major discovery with respect to the question of wolf domestication during the European Palaeolithic.<br />In this study a multi-proxy approach has been employed, including species identification and a consideration of the archaeological and chronological context. The canids’ remains have all been studied regarding their morphology, biometry and surface attributes. All dental and postcranial remains of canids were attributed to a species by using a thorough biometric database built from fossil and modern data from Europe. The morphometry of seven remains is outside the size range variability of wolves and therefore can be securely attributed to dog (<em>Canis familiaris</em>).     <title>First dating results for the Middle Pleistocene industries (Acheulean – Early Middle Palaeolithic) in the Pyrenees – Garonne region: a multi methods geochronological approach (TL, OSL and TT-OSL) of the Duclos and Romentères sites</title>

      <p class="resume">The recent development work of the A65 highway has given the opportunity to broaden the corpus of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic open-air sites known in the southern Aquitaine basin. The sites of Duclos (Auriac, Pyrénées-Orientales) and Romentères (Le Vignau, Landes), discovered in this context, have yielded an abundant lithic record which has been attributed to the Acheulean of Iberian type for the earlier and, essentially, to the Early Middle Palaeolithic for the latter. The archaeological levels are intercalated in sequences that comprise aeolian silts and colluvial units separated by interglacial luvisols. The pedostratigraphic context of the two sites has provided a rare opportunity to propose a reliable chronostratigraphic framework in this area.     <title>Did Gravettian apprentices make projectile elements in Tercis (Landes, France)?</title>

      <p class="resume"><span xml:lang="en" lang="en">1. Presentation of the site. The archaeological site of Tercis (Landes, France) has yielded several concentrations of lithic artefacts discovered since the 19</span><sup>th</sup><span xml:lang="en" lang="en"> century (fig. 1). The majority of these substantial series were collected by C. Normand from the end of the 1970s onwards during the open cast mining of a large limestone quarry by the “Société des Ciments de l’Adour” (fig. 2). The spatial delimitation of these small concentrations scattered along Tercis ridge over a length of about one kilometer evokes rapid flint knapping activities, carried out in a few hours, providing evidence of short-lived installations linked to the presence of abundant flint on the anticlinal. Many human groups were thus attracted by this raw material since the early stages of the Palaeolithic.     <title>New data on the exploitation of flint outcrops during the Middle Palaeolithic: the Mousterian workshop of Chêne Vert at Dirac (Charente, France)</title>

      <p class="resume"><span xml:lang="en" lang="en">The ways in which Neanderthals exploited the landscape and raw material sources constitute a major aspect of the study of Middle Palaeolithic settlement systems. The Aquitaine Basin in the south-west of France, and more specifically the Charente, has been the object of numerous studies exploring open-air sites within the mineral environment (<em>e.g. </em>Park &#38; Féblot-Augustins 2010). The recently discovered Mousterian workshop of Chêne Vert at Dirac, located on a flint outcrop and excavated in a rescue context, presents a rare opportunity for studying Neanderthal procurement strategies directly associated with a readily available raw material.     <title>Textural and geochemical analysis of a pumice polisher with grooves from the Magdalenian site of Duruthy (Sorde, Landes, France)</title>
    <description><![CDATA[
      <p class="resume"><span xml:lang="en" lang="en">Magdalenian archaeological sites often contain grooved polishers used to polish other implements (for example, Capitan and Peyrony 1928). </span>These objects are generally made from sandstone but a few are made from pumice. Bibliographic research revealed that only four sites have yielded pumice stone polishers (fig. 1, fig. 2, tab. 1). These are the sites of Gourdan (Piette 1873), Isturitz (Passemard 1944), Aitzbitarte IV (Barandiaran 1965) and Arancou (Chauchat <em>et al.</em> 1999). Several polishers were found in the Duruthy rock-shelter, Sorde-L'abbaye, Landes. Most of these polishers are in sandstone (fig. 3) but one of them is different and has the appearance of pumice (fig. 4). The textural study and geochemical analysis (fig. 5, fig. 6, tab. 2) of this polisher indicate that it was made from rhyolitic pumice.
